1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition

Up to 48 pianists, 48 violinists, 48 singers and 12 string quartets will be selected for the First Round.

Up to 12 pianists, 12 violinists, 12 singers and 9 string quartets will be selected for the Second Round.

Up to 6 pianists, 6 violinists, 6 singers and 6 string quartets will be selected for the Final Round.

The Organiser will cover the accommodation costs for the participants selected for:

  • the Second Round of the Competition, for the time of the Second Round; and
  • the Final Round of the Competition, from 10 September to 24 September 2018

Preliminary Auditions (20 minutes maximum)

  1. Beethoven - 1st movement from any sonata
  2. Chopin - One or more pieces of the following genres: Ballade, Scherzo, Fantasia, Barcarolle, Polonaises Op. 22, 44, 53, 61Video must be made between 1 Mar - 30 Apr 2018 and must show the pianist’s handwork and the right side of his/her whole figure, filmed with one camera without cuts during the performance of a piece, from a distance of 5 meters at the most.

First Round (25 - 30 minutes)

  1. Two virtuosic etudes: one by Chopin and one by Liszt.
  2. Karol Szymanowski - One of the following etudes from the Four Etudes Op. 4:
    • Etude No. 1 in E- at minor
    • Etude No. 2 in G- at major
    • Etude No. 3 in B- at minor
    • Etude No. 4 in C major
  3. F. Chopin - One of the following works:
    • Ballade in G minor Op. 23
    • Ballade in F major Op. 38
    • Ballade in A- at major Op. 47
    • Ballade in F minor Op. 52
    • Andante spianato and Polonaise in E- at major Op. 22
    • Polonaise in F-sharp minor Op. 44
    • Polonaise in A- at major Op. 53
    • Polonaise-Fantaisie in A- at major Op. 61
    • Fantaisie in F minor Op. 49
    • Barcarolle Fis-dur op. 60
  4. Karol Szymanowski - One Mazurka from the mazurkas Op. 50 or Op. 62 
  5. Any piece(s) by Karol Szymanowski for the remaining time of Round 1.

Second Round (55 - 60 minutes)

  1. Beethoven - Any piano sonata, EXCLUDING the following:
    • Sonata in C minor Op. 10, No. 1
    • Sonata in E major Op. 14, No. 1
    • Sonata in G major Op. 14, No. 2
    • Sonatina in G minor Op. 49, No. 1
    • Sonatina in G major Op. 49, No. 2
    • Sonata in F-sharp major Op. 78
    • Sonata in E minor Op. 90
    • Sonata in B- at major Op. 106
  2. Karol Szymanowski - Two works of at least 20 minutes in total. One of the works must be chosen from the list below and another one is either from the same list or any other work by Szymanowski not performed in the First Round.
    • One or more pieces from the cycle Métopes, 3 Poèms Op. 29
    • One or more pieces from the cycle Masques (Masks), 3 Pieces Op. 34
    • Variations in B- at minor Op. 3
    • Variations on a Polish Folk Theme in B minor Op. 10
    • Fantasy in C major Op. 14
    • Twelve Etudes Op. 33
    • Sonata No. 3 Op. 36
  3. One or more pieces by the following composers, filling in the remaining time of Round 2:
    • Béla Bartók
    • Claude Debussy
    • Sergei Prokofiev
    • Sergei Rachmaninov
    • Maurice Ravel
    • Alexander Scriabin
    • Igor Stravinsky

Final Round with orchestra

One of the following concertos:
  • Béla Bartók - Piano Concerto No. 3
  • Leonard Bernstein - Symphony No. 2 The Age of Anxiety *
  • Witold Lutosławski - Piano Concerto *
  • Andrzej Panufnik - Piano Concerto *
  • Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 1 in D flat major Op. 10
  • Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor Op. 16
  • Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major Op. 26
  • Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor Op. 1
  • Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor Op. 18
  • Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor Op. 30
